A Simple Checklist Every Horse Owner Should Use

A Simple Checklist Every Horse Owner Should Use

Before you feed any new bale, take half a minute and run through this quick safety check. Horses eat pounds of hay every day, and small problems add up fast.

✅ 1. Smell Test

Healthy hay smells clean, grassy, and slightly sweet.

Reject hay that smells:

  • Musty

  • Sour

  • Damp

  • “Basement-like”

Odor is often the first warning sign of mould.

✅ 2. Visual Scan

Open the bale fully and inspect the interior, not just the outside.

Look for:

  • Grey or white fuzzy patches

  • Dark or black spotting

  • Clumped or damp sections

  • Unnatural discoloration

Mould often hides deep inside the bale.

✅ 3. Dust Cloud Check

Shake out a flake in daylight.

If you see a visible dust plume, you are looking at spores, not “normal dust.”

Dusty hay is a major risk factor for equine asthma.

✅ 4. Texture and Heat

Hay should feel dry and springy.

Be cautious if it feels:

  • Warm inside

  • Sticky

  • Heavy with moisture

Warm bales can indicate microbial activity and internal spoilage.

✅ 5. Horse Reaction Matters

Horses often detect danger before humans do.

Red flags include:

  • Refusing hay

  • Picking through it

  • Sneezing or coughing while eating

Never dismiss refusal as fussiness.

✅ 6. The Rule of Zero Compromise

If hay is truly mouldy, do not “work around it.”

Soaking reduces dust, but it does not reliably remove toxins.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Thrive Feed Principle

No feed program can out-perform poor forage.

Safe, clean hay is always step one in protecting the horse’s gut, lungs, and long-term health.
