Conditioning Is the True Performance Enhancer

Feed cannot replace conditioning.

No bag can create mitochondrial density. No pellet can strengthen tendons. No powder can substitute progressive workload.

The survival engine inside the horse is activated through use.

What Conditioning Actually Does

With correct, progressive training:

Capillary density increases.

Mitochondrial numbers rise inside muscle cells.

Oxygen extraction improves.

Tendon and ligament strength adapts.

Neuromuscular coordination sharpens.

These are structural changes. They cannot be purchased. They must be built.

The Illusion of Artificial Energy

When a horse is under conditioned but calorie dense fed, you do not see true performance. You often see:

Spikes in excitability.

Inconsistent effort.

Poor recovery.

Increased injury risk.

Energy without structure is noise.

Structure with balanced fueling is performance.

Practical Conditioning Principles

Progressive overload, not abrupt intensity.

Adequate recovery periods.

Monitoring heart rate and respiration post work.

Respect for age and developmental stage.

Consistency over drama.

Conditioning unlocks what feed alone never will.

The Horse Already Has the Engine

The horse evolved to flee predators, travel long distances, and survive seasonal scarcity. That engine still exists.

Our responsibility is to:

Stabilise the digestive foundation.

Provide correct building blocks.

Apply intelligent conditioning.

When those align, performance is not forced.

It is revealed.

Horses Are Bacteriologists

Let’s get something straight. Horses are not carbohydrate managers. They are not calorie counters. They are not protein seekers. Horses are bacteriologists. Every mouthful a horse takes is not about f
